Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has on Friday, February 28, 2025, delivered the keynote address at the coronation ceremony of Madam Fiona Ngima, the first-ever female President of the National Union of Students Sierra Leone (NUSS).
The momentous event marked a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing push for gender equality and women’s empowerment, reinforcing President Bio’s commitment to breaking barriers for women in leadership.
Addressing the gathering, the First Lady, who also serves as President of the Organisation of African First Ladies, described Fiona Ngima’s historic presidency as a beacon of hope for young girls across Sierra Leone. She emphasised that her ascension to the highest student leadership position is a testament to the impact of progressive policies such as the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act, which aims to create equal opportunities for women in all spheres of life.
“Madam Fiona Ngima’s coronation represents hope for many young girls who aspire to break barriers and achieve their dreams. It serves as a reminder that with support, determination, and the right policies in place, we can create a future where every girl has the opportunity to reach her full potential,” the First Lady stated.
The ceremony, attended by government officials, student representatives, civil society actors, and women’s rights advocates, underscored the growing momentum for female leadership in Sierra Leone. The First Lady urged continued advocacy for policies that protect and uplift women and girls, ensuring that their voices are heard and their contributions recognised.
“As we celebrate this landmark achievement, let us continue to advocate for policies that protect and empower women and girls across Sierra Leone and Africa. Together, we can build a more equitable society that values the contributions of everyone,” she added.
The election and coronation of Madam Fiona Ngima signal a shift in the traditionally male-dominated student leadership space, paving the way for more women to assume key decision-making roles in academia and beyond. With the government’s sustained efforts in promoting gender inclusion, her presidency is expected to inspire a new generation of female leaders ready to shape the future of Sierra Leone.
