First Circuit Court Sitting Commences In Tongo

The Judiciary, is a branch of the Government of the Republic of Sierra Leone that interprets and applies the laws of the state, to ensure impartial justice, and also, to provide a mechanism for the dispensation of universal justice.

To accomplish this, a circuit court has been instituted on the 11th of April 2023. at Tongo Fields, Lower Bambara Chiefdom, Kenema District.

In his statement, the Section Chief of Buima Section; Chief Tejan Mambu, welcomed all and described the commencement of the court in his community, as an appropriate and timely action.  He said that to a larger extent, justice was now visible to the people of Lower Bambara Chiefdom, and therefore called on his people to fully support the Justice system.

Speaking on behalf of the Police Regional Commander East, Mr. Andrew Mustapha Kamara, who was unavoidably absent due to other important official duties, the Local Unit Commander, Tongo Division Chief Superintendent Tucker, expressed his profound gratitude to the Judiciary, for making justice to be assessed by all.

He said it has always been a daunting task, for his investigators, to successfully secure convictions in court, because of the proximity. He noted that both witnesses and complainants were findings it difficult to undo the financial burdens attached to their to-and-fro movement from Tongo to Kenema, all by themselves. Therefore, they always end up dropping off their cases unwillingly.

The LUC revealed that the existence of the court in the Tongo fields would now help greatly to expedite cases, as justice delayed, is justice denied.

The Magistrate of the court, his Lordship Magistrate Abdul Carew, appreciated the people of Lower Bambara and assured them of their safety, and a feeling of sustainable peace.

He emphatically disclosed that those who want to accept peace will enjoy peace, but those who might tend to be lawbreakers, will not have a place in the community.

Elin Thomas Archibald, Master, and Registrar of the Judiciary of Sierra Leone informed all that the action to open a Circuit Court in Tongo Fields, was in fulfillment of the promise made by the Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Desmond Babatunde Edwards, when, upon his assumption as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone, he assured the people of this country that he would take justice to the door steps of Sierra Leoneans.

She further assured the people that the court was in Tongo to stay and that the High Court of Sierra Leone would also commence hearing in Tongo, as the justice management was tirelessly working on it.

The Judiciary Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alkash Sannoh maintained that the existence of the court in Tongo would reduce impunity, and its actions would serve as a precedent for those whose business was to break the law.

Similar statements were delivered by the Member of Parliament Constituency 015, Hon Mohamed Lansana, Hawa Morie women’s leader, SLTU Chairman, Rev. Denis K. Mannah, and Ibrahim Kondor, the current Chairman of the seven tribal heads in Tongo Fields.
