A one-day training session on Integrity and Ethical Journalism was successfully held on Saturday, 2nd August 2025, at the Imperial Hotel in Bo City. The event, organized by female journalists in the region, brought together both seasoned and aspiring media practitioners to promote ethical standards and professional values within the journalism profession.

Speaking on behalf of the organizers, Fatmata Grace Okekearu stated that the training aimed to refresh the knowledge of practicing female journalists while mentoring emerging professionals on the fundamental principles of ethical journalism.

“It’s important that we continue to build each other up and uphold the integrity of our profession,” she emphasized.

Serving as lead facilitator, Mr. Kaillie Kallon, Permanent Secretary of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), expressed admiration for the initiative. He praised the spirit of collaboration and the dedication shown by the participants, adding that such events play a vital role in empowering women in the media industry.

“I am very impressed with the level of organization and unity. I will always be ready to work with female journalists because I believe in empowering women through knowledge,” he affirmed.

Also present at the event was Mr. Alhaji Manika Kamara, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), who delivered an encouraging message. He expressed satisfaction at seeing female journalists take the lead in their professional development.

Mr. Kamara also highlighted SLAJ’s ongoing support for women in journalism, referencing the EU-funded digital literacy program currently being implemented by BBC Media Action, which is specifically tailored to benefit female journalists.

“This is the time to stay united and focused,” he urged.

The training concluded with a collective call for sustained collaboration among female journalists and a renewed commitment to upholding the ethical standards and integrity that define the journalism profession.

The success of the event underscores the growing leadership and solidarity among female media professionals in Sierra Leone, setting the stage for more initiatives that champion responsible journalism and gender empowerment.
