As part of their efforts in giving back to the department, class of 2023 has donated a signboard to the Civil engineering department on Wednesday 3rd August, 2023 at the Engineering Department on Fourah Bay College Campus in Freetown.
Head of Department for Civil Engineering at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, Dr. Abdul Koroma, expressed the need for more students, especially female students, in the country to apply for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses. He made this statement during a presentation ceremony where outgoing final year students of the Civil Engineering department showed their appreciation by gifting the department an appreciation plaque and a signboard.
Dr. Koroma highlighted that Civil Engineering is the largest department in their faculty, attracting the highest number of students, including female students. He emphasized that the course has much to offer, with new and exciting opportunities that will benefit prospective students pursuing Civil Engineering.
He thanked the outgoing final year students for their generous donation and encouraged them to perform excellently as they venture into the world beyond college. Additionally, he called on parents to support and encourage their children to consider pursuing STEM courses.
He assured all that the donated of the signboard will be maintain for their intended purpose in order to enhance the recognition to the department, adding that other department that are in the engineering department has billboard but the Civil Engineering has never got any.
He maintained that appreciative of the fact that Engineers are pivotal to nation building, but women are afraid to come to the department because they think that it’s very difficult.
He encouraged students that want to read engineering to come at the civil engineering department, because they’re introducing new modules that will fit international job market. Class Rep, Abdul Moses Amara, said since they entered in 2018, they discovered that there was no description of the department that can show this is civil engineering department that was why decided to donate the signboard to the department.
“I am happy that Civil Engineering classes of 2023 are donating the plaque to the department that has shown that we appreciate e the work of the lecturers and the staff of the university, noting although the process was not an easy one but they were able to go thought it”, he stated.
He urged other past students that have passed through the department to come and help, he said the department needs computers and other equipment that will help the lecturers to be able to teach them.
He thanked all the lecturers staff, and the management of the University for their Tremendous Job they have done over the past years during his days in college, he also sends a word of encouragement to his classmate to remember the department.
