Abdulai Turay who impersonated as a Lecturer, lecturing at Njala University, and a holder of PhD Mokondae Campus was arrested and charged to Court for chopping over fourteen thousand Leones.
The accused on Tuesday 2nd May 2023, made his first appearance before Magistrate Mark Ngegba of Court No 1 Pademba Road, Freetown, on five counts, one count of Personation contrary to Section 3 of Cap 34 as amended by Sub-Section 4 and 5 of the Personation and Officer (amended) Act 13 of 1975 and four counts of obtaining money by false pretenses contrary to Section 32 (1) of the Larceny Act 1916.
According to the charge sheet on count 1 the accused Abdulai Turay on the 3rd April 2023, at Robert Lane, Kossoh town, Jui, Freetown, falsely pretending to be a PhD holder and a Lecturer at Njala University, Mokondae Campus, with intent to cause it to be believed that he is a holder of such office and bearer of such authority and who under such assumed character obtained the total sum of fourteen thousand five hundred and seventy four new Leones, from Francis Morlai Lincoln by falsely pretending that he would facilitate his post graduate scholarship programmes to study overseas, which is known to be false.
Count 2 states that the accused on the same date and place with intent to defraud obtained the sum of one thousand five hundred Leones from Francis Morlai Lincoln by falsely pretending that you will facilitate the post graduate scholarship programmes to study over sea, which is known to be false.
According to count 3, the accused on the 5th April 2023, at No. 7 Priscilla Street, Freetown, with intent to defraud obtained the sum of six thousand Leones, from Francis Morlai Lincoln by falsely pretending that he will facilitate the post graduate scholarship programmes for Mark John Ensa to study over sea, which is known to be false.
Count 4 state that the accused on the 6th April 2023, at East End Police area, Freetown, with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of three thousand Leones from Francis Morlai Lincoln by falsely pretending that he will facilitate the post graduate scholarship programmes for Sheka Kalokoh to study over sea, which is known to be false.
Count 5 state that the accused Abdulai Turay on the same date 6th April 2023, in Freetown, with intent to defraud obtained the sum of three thousand Leones from Francis Morlai Lincoln by falsely pretending that he will facilitate the post graduate scholarship programmes for Aaron Sahr Tengbeh to study over sea, which is known to be false.
When the charges were read and explained to the accused person No plea was taken.
The accused person was unrepresented by a legal representative.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Ngegba refused bail and sent the accused person to the male correctional center in Freetown.
The matter is adjourned to the 9th May 2023.
