Kono District’s Extension Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mohamed Sesay, commended animal farmers in the district during the just-concluded World Food Day Celebration in Kailahun.
He outlined the successes, challenges, and new ideas gained during this year’s World Food Day celebration. He said the three well-fed cattle taken to the host district attracted the attention of almost everyone who witnessed this year’s World Food Day celebration, thereby putting Kono District on the map regarding livestock or animal conservation in Sierra Leone. ” The three cattle projected the fact that Kono has the potential to support agriculture in the country,” Sesay said.
The Extension Officer mentioned that the cattle were sold to the highest bidder during the celebration, which, in return, put smiles on the faces of the farmers.
He said the district has been aware of the challenges faced by the life stock and crop farmers in Kono District over the years. Sesay encouraged crop farmers to put in more effort by putting Kono in the district on a smooth path.
Amie Bangura, a seasoned farmer in Koinadugu District, also commended the livestock farmers in Kono District for showing the world that agriculture is not just centered on crop farming but a combination of animal and crop farming.
She urged other life stock rearers in the country to emulate farmers’ agricultural practices in Kono District to strengthen Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector.
