Ports Authority head coach, Lamin Bangura, has been confirmed dead following a fatal road accident along Konta Line, the incident occurred onboard the Port Authority team bus while en route to honor the Waterfront Boys’ midweek Leone Rock Premier League clash against Kahunla Rangers in Kenema.
Known for his dreadlocks, Coach Lamin Bangura guided Diamond Stars to their first Premier League title in 2012, becoming only the first Sierra Leonean club outside Freetown to win the league title.
During his playing days, Lamin Bangura played for Diamond Stars, and Real Republicans in the Sierra Leone national league before moving to Guinea to play for AS Kaloum.
He then departed Guinea to play for ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast and Etoile Sportive Du Shahel of Tunisia.
Lamin Bangura was part of the As Kaloum team that reached the 1995 final of the defunct CAF clubs cup competition.
At International Level, the former PORTS Authority coach made many appearances for Leone Stars. He was part of the Leone Stars team that participated during the 1994 and 1996 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and South Africa, respectively.
Lamin Bangura was named manager of Shooting Stars just before the West African Football Union (WAFU) Under-20 tournament that was staged in Ghana 2013.
He was also named national Homebased and U23 coach by the Sierra Leone Football Association.
The Former Diamond Stars and Real Republicans defender was also at one time appointed Under -17 national coach.
Coach Lamin Bangura was the assistant coach to former Sierra Leone Swedish head coach Olaf Mattson during the 2014 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers.
He also has a wealth of experience coaching in Guinea, with Santoba FC and AS Kaloum among others.
The Secretary General of Port Authority FC said, Bangura was taken to hospital just after the Accident occurred but later gave up due to the excessive discharge of blood at the Rokupa hospital in Freetown.
” It is a sad day for Sierra Leone Football, this shocking and I’m devastated, I’m speechless. A legend and good coach have gone so soon.”
Six players were also injured in the crash in Tonkolili district, which some in a serious condition, and they are receiving treatment in Freetown.
The Premier league board has issued a press release for the cancellation of the match between Khaunla Rangers FC vs Port Authority FC.
