Environment Protection Agency held a one day workshop for Strategic Approach for International Chemical Management (SAICM) Project at the Civil Service Training College, Tower Hill Freetown on the 25th of November 2022.
The Executive Director Bashir Idriss for Environmental Health said the international framework aim is to achieve sound management of chemicals they will be using chemicals because they’ve lots of useful outcomes for our life.
He said there are also consequences if we don’t manage them properly, to a certain wage at the amount of sector or approach of managing chemicals and waste throughout their live circle management from the time chemicals were manufactured right throughout their useful period till the time they where disposed is said that basically what the (SAICM) use to do.
Idriss said they have intentions to open some management of chemicals and waste to their strategy development goals, like Water, renewable energy, none polluting energy.
The head of the Environment Protection Agency, Dr Bondi Gevao talked about the problem they have as a nation in terms of addressing chemical issues and waste problems.
He also said the Arm of Government is responsible for environmental governance which includes the air we breathe, and the food we eat is the impact we have on our environment.
Gevao reiterated that the president gave his assent to a new Act even though the EPA had an existing Act in 2008. He further that there is a need for the act to be repealed and to strengthen the environmental governance in Sierra Leone.
The program was climaxed by group work and questions sessions.
