Eni, the Italian multinational energy company, has signed a reconnaissance permit agreement with Sierra Leone’s Petroleum Directorate (PDSL) to advance offshore technical studies, the Directorate announced on Friday.
A reconnaissance permit is a short-term, non-exclusive license that allows a company to carry out preliminary, non-intrusive geological and geophysical studies in a defined area, typically to assess the potential for oil and gas exploration.
This agreement is part of the government’s broader effort to attract investment to the hydrocarbons sector and promote sustainable resource development in the country.
“This agreement will strengthen institutional capacity, enhance data quality, and generate valuable insights to inform responsible oil and gas development for the benefit of all Sierra Leoneans,” said Eng. Foday B. L. Mansaray, Director General of the Petroleum Directorate.
The reconnaissance permit enables Eni to conduct geological and geophysical evaluations under a minimum work program, laying the foundation for future exploration and potential drilling activities.
President Julius Maada Bio welcomed the agreement, highlighting its significance as part of Sierra Leone’s broader agenda for economic diversification and prosperity through the responsible harnessing of natural resources.
The Petroleum Directorate emphasized that the agreement is in line with the country’s ongoing efforts to transform its oil, gas, and broader economic sectors, reinforcing Sierra Leone’s commitment to providing a stable and attractive environment for investment.
