Employee Recounts Maltreatment by JINXIANG Mining Company

Mr. Mohamed Sissoko, a resident of No 45 Big Waterloo Street has brought civil law suit against his employee, the management of Jinxiang Mining Company which operates in Wangor chiefdom Karene district as a result of maltreatment meted out to him by the company.

Explaining in court, Mohamed Sissoko said he did not receive a letter of appointment from the company but as a site manager he was responsible to oversee all the work happening in the company.

Mr. Sissoko said he was also serving as driver and an interpreter between the company and the community people.

He recounts that during the last week of April 2020 he received information from management that the company will have an emergency inspection from the Environment Protection Agency (EPA).

He noted that within a short time notice he needed to fix everything at the mining site and he gathered staff to ensure there is waste segregation, dust suppression and sign board fixing among other things.

“In the process of fixing an oil tank that was leaking I injured my left ankle, I have to use all my savings to take care of myself medically at the Makeni government hospital. The company showed no interest until after he was discharged and have to report back for work”, he narrated.

He explained that he reported the matter to the ministry of labour where he borrowed le2 million for him to recuperate fully.

He stated that later he received three months’ salary from the company in the tune of Le 6 million but repaid back the ministry of Labour the Le2million he owed them.

Mr Sissoko said with the help of the ministry of labour he brought a civil action against Jinxiang Company in respect of his outstanding salary, compensation for injury, and end of service benefit.

Counsel for plaintiff is Maitland Tolla Thompson (jnr) and defense counsel is FK Garber. The matter has been adjourned to the 17th February 2022 by Justice John Bosco Alieu for further hearing.
