In a ceremony held on June 21st, 2024, Edmond Sylvester Alpha was sworn in as the new electoral commissioner for Sierra Leone’s Southern region.

The event was presided over by President Julius Maada Bio, who expressed his commitment to supporting the country’s electoral institutions in delivering “credible, inclusive, fair, and transparent elections.”

“I am committed to providing the requisite support and enabling ecosystem for our electoral institution to deliver credible, inclusive, fair, and transparent elections,” President Bio said during the swearing-in ceremony. “This drive is rooted in our principled resolution to improve and strengthen our nation’s democratic credentials.”

Alpha’s appointment comes as Sierra Leone continues to strengthen its democratic processes and institutions in the lead-up to the next general elections, scheduled for 2025. The Southern region, which includes the cities of Bo, Bonthe, and Pujehun, is a crucial battleground for political parties competing for seats in the country’s parliament and the presidency.

In his remarks, President Bio congratulated Alpha on his new role and expressed confidence in his ability to serve the country effectively. “Congratulations. I wish you a successful tenure as you serve your country,” the President said.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior government officials, representatives of political parties, and members of the local community. The event underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process and strengthening Sierra Leone’s democratic foundations.

As the new electoral commissioner for the Southern region, Edmond Sylvester Alpha will be responsible for overseeing the registration of voters, the conduct of elections, and the tabulation and reporting of results within his jurisdiction. His appointment is seen as a crucial step in the country’s efforts to consolidate its democratic progress and ensure that the upcoming elections are free, fair, and transparent.
