ECOWAS Activates Military Standby Force Against Niger

According to a signed Communiqué by some Africa President present at the ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting in Abuja on 10th August , has ordered all Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all it elements with immediate effects.

President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray made the declaration while reading the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup at the ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting in Abuja.

ECOWAS said all efforts made to dialogue with Niger Republic military junta have been defiantly rejected by coup leaders as they condemn continuous detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

The resolution partly reads, “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS stand-by force with all its elements immediately.

“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”

The communique further called on the United Nation, Africa Union and partner countries to support the resolution to swiftly restore constitutional governance in Niger.

 “We call on the Africa Union to endorse all the decisions taken by the ECOWAS authority on the situation in Niger…further call on all partner countries and institutions including the United Nations, to support ECOWAS in its efforts to ensure a quick restoration of constitutional order in conformity with its normative instruments.”
