The leading agrochemical, machinery, and poultry feed firm in Sierra Leone, Eastern Farmers Agric and General Enterprise hosted a seminar on poultry farm management for poultry farmers on Tuesday, 11th March 2025, with the theme “Egg Shell Quality: Stronger for Longer,” and it took place at the Atlantic Lumley Hotel in Freetown.

In his statement, Sahr Lahai Jusu, Executive Chairman of Eastern Farmers Agriculture and General Enterprise (EFAGE, SL) Limited, stated that findings from a survey they conducted in 2024 reveal that access to sustainable and affordable high-performing feed is the biggest constraint affecting the poultry industry in Sierra Leone.

He noted that EFAGE and its partner, Trouw-Nutrition from the Netherlands, are not only providing quality, high-performing feeds to farmers but also providing extension and other technical support to ensure that farmers manage their feed application process properly.

Sahr L. Jusu further stated that most farmers don’t have the technical knowledge and capacity to make their poultry productive, noting that this seminar will significantly impact the poultry industry in Sierra Leone.

In his presentation, Samuel Heloo, from Nutreco Africa based in Ghana, outlined several areas of interest ranging from the pillars to success in the poultry industry, to bird genetic selection, poultry nutrition, the partnership with EFAGE and how poultry farmers in Sierra Leone can benefit from their services.

He further states that with over 125 years of experience in animal feeds,  they are providing oversight and quality assurance for the feeds produced in Sierra Leone by EFAGE to ensure they meet international standards.

The farmers present shared some of their experiences and challenges in the industry and how they can collaborate with EFAGE and their partners to increase poultry production in Sierra Leone to reduce the reliance on the importation of eggs and chicken.

This seminar will be followed by the commissioning of the first large-scale commercial Poultry Feed Mill Plant (Hendrix 4U Plant) that can produce about 7,500 tons or 150,000 50kg bags per annum on Wednesday, 12th March 2025, in Waterloo.
