As the haunt for the Sierra Leone Premier intensifies, East End Lions Football Club on 14th April 2023 tamed Port Authority Football Club as they defeated them by two comfortably goals and pressed on for the title.
The match took place at the Government Trade Centre field, with both teams determined to get a second round of the league in their favour.
Two goals from Suliman S. Kargbo in (50) minutes and (54) were enough to get the club back to winning ways after poor form in the phrase.
The first goal came from a decisive error and the informed winger Prince Barrie’s assist to Suliman Kargbo put the ball in the back of the net.
The second came from the cross ball in the (18) yard box and the same defensive error for the second goal caused the second goal and Sulaiman Kargbo was in attendance buried home to extend the lead for East End Lions Football Club.
Ports Authority Football Club missed key chances that could help them Salvage points from the Eastern derby, the Strikers were not clinical in front goal in the entire match giving away close chances.
Raymond Hunter the acting head coach of East End Lions talking to this medium said he felt excited about the win against a strong side like Port Authority Football who last defeated them in the same fixtures away from home.
“Today’s win Port Authority is vital to winning because it has been a while since we have been looking for such a win at home, but today we break the deadlock at home and win by two goals to nil”, the acting coach said.
He noted that most of what the players did during the match is a replica of what they have been doing in the training field and that shows in the match.
“Today’s match, we are going to continue with such trends in the second half of the season because there is no third phase we have to work now and get where they are expecting the team to be and that is challenging for the title”, he said.
He called on the fans to always be around the boys and the technical team as they are to work hard and give them the desired results on each match day.
Lamin Bangura the head coach of Ports Authority said the result is disappointing, as according to him the mentality of the players ahead of the match day caused the defeats because as he said most of them did not believe that the match is going to play and the two weeks break, they gave them, some of the players overdue the break and failed to turn up for the training ahead of match day.
He noted that they are going to work now and prepare for the next match, he describes the defeat as a lack of concentration from the defenders that caused the team to concede the two goals.
He said there are plans to boost the squads ahead of the other matches in the second round of the league; one key area why East End Lions dominated us is because they used their new players and they are with just the same squad, but that will be fixed up come next matches in the league.
Port Authority remains in sixth position in the league with 25 points after eighteen matches winning six, seven draws, and five defeats.
At Angola Town, Real Republicans drew goalless with Old Edwardians as the May Park Boys are still in the relegation zone.
