The race for the next Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Southern Region, took a dynamic turn over the weekend as veteran journalist and media rights advocate, Madam Diana Veronica Fillie Blackie, officially unveiled her manifesto at a well-attended ceremony held at the Imperial Hotel in Bo.

More than a political launch, the event was a powerful call to action centered on unity, empowerment, and professionalism within Sierra Leone’s media sector.

Chairing the occasion, Madam Fatmata Grace Okekearu described Madam Diana’s candidacy as a beacon of dedication, experience, and resilience. She encouraged colleagues to support leaders who uphold integrity and are committed to strengthening the media landscape.

“This is not just about one woman’s ambition; it’s about the future of SLAJ South,” Madam Okekearu affirmed.

In a show of support, George Philip Jambawai, Regional Manager for Africa Young Voices (AYV) South, emphasized the need for unity among journalists as the election draws near.

“Let us speak with one voice and choose wisely. Our vote should reflect our values and our vision for a stronger SLAJ,” he urged.

Beatrice Sao Bundu, Regional Vice Coordinator of Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL), also expressed her endorsement of Madam Diana’s candidacy.

“Today, we see a woman of substance stepping forward. We are proud to stand with her,” she declared.

In her address, Madam Diana outlined a transformative vision rooted in transparency, equity, and capacity building. She emphasized her dedication to uplifting all members of the association regardless of gender or background—and highlighted her longstanding track record with WIMSAL and the National Women in Governance Network.

“This campaign is about leadership that listens, leads, and delivers. Together, we can set a new standard for professionalism in our region,” she said passionately.

The manifesto was officially launched by Mr. Henry Pawel, Chief Administrator of the Bo City Council, who praised the moment as a milestone for inclusive and participatory leadership in the media sector.

“This is not just a campaign document it’s a roadmap for growth and unity within SLAJ South,” he remarked.

As anticipation builds ahead of the regional elections, Madam Diana’s manifesto launch has clearly positioned her as a frontrunner, injecting fresh energy into the movement for purposeful and inclusive leadership within Sierra Leone’s journalism community.
