The Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Mima Yema Mimi Sobba-Stephens, announced significant strides following the successful launch of “Go Circular Week,” which took place from February 20 to 27, 2025.
This initiative is aimed at combating plastic pollution through enhanced collaboration among government bodies, private sector entities, local leaders, and various stakeholders.
The campaign’s key focus was the introduction of two indigenous organizations: the Sierra Leone Waste Management Association and the National Recyclers Association. These organizations are set to lead efforts in improving waste management and recycling practices across the country.
During the week, officials engaged with a wide range of participants, including hotel and restaurant owners, beach bar managers, sand miners, and policymakers, to address the critical issue of plastic waste in Sierra Leone.
Deputy Minister Sobba-Stephens emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling plastic pollution, with plans to introduce comprehensive legislation this year to regulate plastic usage effectively. “Our collective action is essential in addressing the growing concern of plastic waste in our environment, and we are committed to creating a sustainable future,” she stated.
In a bid to increase private sector involvement, the initiative also saw the introduction of a new app by a local company, “Dorti Box.” This app aims to provide affordable access to waste management services for citizens and empower both individuals and businesses to take an active role in waste management practices.
The “Go Circular Week” initiative reflects Sierra Leone’s commitment to fostering a cleaner, greener environment by promoting sustainable practices and encouraging community participation. As the country takes these vital steps, collaboration across various sectors highlights the importance of unity in addressing environmental challenges.
With continued support and engagement, Sierra Leone is poised to make significant progress in reducing plastic pollution and raising public awareness about waste management.
