The Deputy Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Augustine Foday Ngobie, has on Saturday 15th March, 2025, officially turned the sod for the construction of a six-classroom junior secondary school in Malegohun Chiefdom, Kenema District. The self-funded project, championed by Deputy ACC boss, is a significant step towards improving access to quality education, ensuring that children in the Upper and Lower Torgboma Sections no longer have to walk over four miles daily to the nearest junior secondary school.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Chief Ngobie emphasised the critical link between education and national development, noting that human capital development is essential in the fight against corruption and poverty. “Education is the lifeblood of development. It empowers individuals, reduces vulnerability to corruption, and builds a society grounded in integrity and accountability. This is why I see it as both a duty and a necessity to invest in education for my people,” he stated.
The school will comprise a Principal’s Office, General Staff Room, Staff Quarters, and Water and Sanitation Facilities, ensuring a conducive learning environment for students and teachers. Chief Ngobie reaffirmed that his commitment to education aligns with His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for human capital development, which remains a pillar of national progress and a key strategy in the fight against corruption.
Beyond providing access to education, Mr. Ngobie disclosed that the project also serves as an intervention against corruption and societal challenges that threaten the future of young people in Malegohun Chiefdom. “A lack of education creates room for corruption, crime, and lawlessness. When young people have access to quality education, they are less likely to fall into corrupt practices, and they become empowered to contribute meaningfully to their communities,” he remarked.
He also pointed out that the rich mineral deposits in Malegohun, including diamond and gold, have led many young people to abandon education for quick financial gains in mining activities, a trend that has deprived the community of an educated workforce.
Additionally, he highlighted the devastating effects of drug abuse, including the rising consumption of Kush, Tramadol, and Blue Boat, which have crippled many young lives. He stressed that providing educational opportunities is one of the most effective ways to combat these social ills.
Chief Ngobie assured the community that the construction of the school will progress swiftly, underscoring his dedication to empowering future generations through education and integrity as two key pillars in the fight against corruption.
It could be noted that this significant development is among many others he has previously carried including the construction of a bridge, provision of scholarship annually to pupils that excel in the BECE Exams, December festive events among many – manifesting his deep love and attachment for his people and community.
