Data Science Salone in collaboration with Orange Digital Centre has held tech talk in the bid of developing open source dataset and web development on Friday 27th May, 2022.
Mohamed James, Data Scientist at the Ministry of Basic Secondary School Education said in view of the compelling growth of data, Data Science Salone had come to cushion scientific approaches, procedures, algorithms and framework to extract the knowledge from the mass amount of data; adding that the cultivated data can be either structured or unstructured. ‘’Data science is a concept to bring together ideas, data examination, machine learning and their related strategies to comprehend and dissect genuine phenomena with data,’’ he affirmed.
He revealed that Data Science Salone had been an extension of different sorts of data analysis that engulfed multiple visualization, pattern recognition, probability modelling, data engineering as well as signal processing which would transform tens of thousands of activities happening globally.
Mohamed James disclosed that one of the objectives of Data Science Salone had been awareness creation among students, researchers, businesses and policy makers. He said Data Science Salone catered not only for data scientists but also for network engineers, tech bloggers, tech enthusiasts, and tech evangelists among others. He stated that the vision swirling with the data science community in Sierra Leone hinged on creating the enabling environment for tech experts in understanding the need for the country to solve the overarching tech problems.
He said that tech professionals in Sierra Leone had to be key players especially when the country had been swinging on policy making and data revitalization. ‘’We understand the problem as tech experts. Therefore, we need to come as a force to embrace this course and make Sierra Leone the next Silicon Valley,’’ Mohamed James averred.
Priscilla Okechukwu, Head of Coding at Orange Digital Centre appreciated the idea of Data Science Salone as the hub of tech experts with the forte of transforming Sierra Leone’s data system. She said Orange Digital Centre would be served as the one stop arena for tech innovation and data library. Priscilla Okechukwu urged women to involve in tech activities as career.
Mohamed Barrie, Financial Data Expert at the Bank of Sierra Leone said Sierra Leoneans should not dwelling in the gap that had been created overtime in terms of tech development and data management, but to fine solution for these problems. He implored Data Science Salone to merge the different tech professionals around the country and form a formidable way in exploring into the data space.
