Cricket Sierra Leone (CSL) launched its Cricket 4 School flagship programme on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, at the Monjasa Park, Murray Town Field, Freetown.
Bringing together 12 schools from the far east to the far west of Freetown and a host of pupils, teachers and guests, the event laid the groundwork for months of cricket entry-level activities, which aims at training 1,000 PE teachers and increasing participation in hard-to-reach communities.
Speaking at the launch, the Board Chairman of CSL Francis Trevor Samura said the programme is a vision of CSL to empower PE teachers. “We do not have human resource to reach all schools. The teachers will help in that regard,” he told the gathering, noting that they decided to produce local equipment since shipping such items from overseas costs a lot.
“In addition to these 100 sets of cricket tools, we expect to receive 500 more from goodwill partners overseas. They are being shipped and will be distributed once they are here,” he said, thanking the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education for creating the enabling environment.
At Monjasa Park, the day commenced with two demonstration matches featuring Police Primary School vs Murray Town Municipal Primary School and Saint Edward’s Junior Secondary School vs Murray Town Municipal Secondary School. The encounters showed the characteristics of modified cricket, which can be played anywhere, anyhow, and at anytime.
The formal launch of the programme and the distribution of equipment marked the beginning of school cricket activities for the year 2026.
