The Chairman of Cricket Sierra Leone, Francis Trevor Samura, has on January 3rd, 2024 revealed to this medium that the Federation concluded 2023 with a mix of success and challenges.
He confirmed that Cricket Sierra Leone athletes experienced significant success in 2023, participating in six international competitions from U-19 to senior levels. The teams delivered impressive performances, with the men’s male Patriots team standing out in high-performance matches.
These international competitions have contributed to the domestic improvement of the teams. The Federation is actively involved in enhancing their capabilities, recognizing that participation in ICC competitions requires a substantial presence in domestic competitions. To qualify for ICC events, teams must engage in at least ten competitions across all levels.
Mr. Samura highlighted that over the past 13 years, the Cricket board has successfully mobilized revenue, exceeding projections for non-ICC income. While ICC has been a major financial supporter, constituting seventy percent of the support for Cricket Sierra Leone, the Federation achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by generating 57 percent of its revenue independently.
Looking ahead to 2024/2025, the Federation aims to build on the successes of 2023. The international body is closely monitoring the number of coaches, umpires, playing pitches, and staff. Attention is also directed at the senior National male Patriots, matches played, Elite Cricket League, Division one for both categories, and the number of female teams. Mr. Samura emphasized the Federation’s commitment to reaching new milestones in 2024.
Acknowledging challenges in governance during 2023, with some boards facing structural issues, Mr. Samura commended the National Sports Authority and the Ministry for playing a vital role in restoring peace within the Cricket family.
On the fronts of rebranding and infrastructure development, the Federation has reached agreements with a contractor company. Work is set to commence on the Fourah Bay College Cricket pitch and Sussex ground, signaling the Federation’s dedication to hosting cricket tournaments in the country.
