Cricket Sierra Leone (CSL) is making significant strides towards increasing transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency by engaging Gordon and Associates, a well-respected auditing firm, to evaluate its internal structures and daily operations. This initiative, which received unanimous approval during the board’s latest meeting, represents a critical step in the federation’s ongoing mission to foster credibility and professionalism within Sierra Leone’s sports sector.
The auditing process kicked off with an interactive session at the CSL Secretariat conference hall in Kingtom, Freetown, attended by representatives from key departments, including coaches, umpires, scorers, tournament directors, the media unit, technical officers, and administrative staff. The session was led by Gordon & Associates’ Director, Mrs. Zyna Gordon-Browne, who clarified that the audit’s intention was supportive rather than punitive.
“We are not here to take jobs away from anyone,” she reassured the staff. “Our role is to observe, advise, and help CSL align itself with international best practices so that the federation can operate as a credible and sustainable institution.” This reassurance alleviated initial concerns among staff about potential job losses, framing the audit as a chance to identify gaps, strengths, and actionable recommendations for the benefit of both the federation and its employees.
During the session, CSL’s General Manager provided a detailed overview of the interconnected responsibilities that sustain cricket in the country, describing operations as a “chain of interdependence.” For instance, he explained the vital role groundsmen play in preparing the Oval for matches, ensuring that umpires are informed and that play proceeds under fair conditions. In adverse weather, groundsmen act quickly to protect the pitch, while umpires assess its condition to ensure safety when play resumes.
He also discussed how umpires utilize the internationally recognized Duckworth-Lewis rules to determine match results when rain interrupts play. The collaboration between umpires and scorers was highlighted, with scorers meticulously tracking runs, boundaries, and wickets via manual and electronic systems, ensuring accurate match results for players, fans, and officials.
Beyond match-day logistics, the General Manager emphasized the importance of the technical director in overseeing structural sport development and the tournament director’s role in organizing domestic competitions. The media unit’s contribution in promoting games and success stories was also noted as essential for maintaining cricket’s visibility.
Following the briefing, auditors engaged staff in open discussions, addressing concerns about salaries, overtime, and budget planning. The Gordon & Associates team emphasized that staff motivation is closely linked to transparency and equitable pay structures, with Mrs. Gordon-Browne stating, “When workers are well compensated and their welfare is prioritized, they are more likely to approach their tasks with seriousness and integrity.”
The auditing team plans to conduct departmental visits in the coming weeks to closely observe operations, understand challenges, and recommend improvements, committing to provide constructive feedback rather than criticism.
Additionally, the auditors highlighted the need for enhanced digital visibility for the federation, advocating for a stronger presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, alongside a dedicated website. “Expanding digital engagement is not just about branding,” one auditor remarked, “it’s about inspiring young players, attracting sponsors, and building a national fan base.”
The session concluded with a tour of the CSL Secretariat and the Oval, where auditors observed the facilities and working conditions. Their initial feedback was positive, though they noted that further upgrades are necessary to meet international standards.
As the audit progresses, Gordon & Associates will present a comprehensive report to the CSL board detailing strengths, weaknesses, and recommendations for improvement. For Cricket Sierra Leone, this audit transcends mere compliance; it is part of a broader vision to elevate the sport to global standards, ensuring that players, officials, and fans can take pride in its management.
By proactively inviting external auditors to assess its operations, Cricket Sierra Leone has demonstrated its commitment to accountability and reform, potentially setting a precedent for other sports federations within the country.
