In a dramatic turn of events at the High Court of Sierra Leone, Major Musa Adazo Leslie Dassama took to the witness stand on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, becoming the 23rd witness in the ongoing court martial proceedings. Amidst visible pain from gunshot wounds sustained during an armor break at Wilberforce Barracks in Freetown on November 26, 2023, Major Dassama recounted the harrowing experience of being shot with a grenade poppel weapon by Corporal Kemoh.
According to his testimony, the events leading up to the attack unfolded on November 25, 2023, when Major General Dauda Alpha ordered RSLAF officers to report to military headquarters due to intelligence regarding a potential attack on the nation’s capital. Major Dassama, serving as Joint Force Communication Officer, was tasked with disseminating this information to personnel.
Major Dassama further revealed that despite efforts to reach Lieutenant Colonel Charles Yabba, custodian of the armory at Wilberforce, no contact could be established. Subsequently, Major General Alpha instructed security measures be implemented at the 5th Infantry Battalion, where Yabba was stationed.
On the night of November 25, 2023, patrols were organized, and Major Dassama received a report of the armor break at Wilberforce Barracks. Responding swiftly, he mobilized his men, per Major General Alpha’s orders, to confront the assailants. However, upon observing suspicious activity at the barracks, Major Dassama encountered Corporal Kemoh, who, despite orders, refused to comply. In the ensuing confrontation, Kemoh shot Major Dassama with a grenade poppel gun, causing severe injuries.
Despite his wounds, Major Dassama bravely returned to action after receiving first aid treatment. Additionally, he provided crucial assistance in verifying the identities of three individuals linked to the incident.
During the cross-examination, Major Tapia Pawah Bangura represented the state, while Ibrahim Bangura served as one of the defense counsels. Following rigorous questioning from both sides, Judge Advocate Mark Ngegba adjourned the proceedings to Thursday, March 14, 2024.
The testimony of Major Dassama sheds light on the events surrounding the armor break and underscores the bravery and dedication of the RSLAF personnel in the face of adversity. As the court martial continues, Sierra Leoneans await further revelations and justice for the accused and the victims alike.
