The President of the Sierra Leone Taekwondo Association on 23rd August 2023 was appointed by the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union to serve as interim Regional Representative for 19 Commonwealth African countries.
Oness Abayomi Johnson is a seasoned administrator who has been involved in Sports for more than for over 20 years and has served in various capacities at the national and international levels. Commonwealth Taekwondo Union appointed him to serve as Interim Member for Africa.
He is currently the president of the Sierra Leone Taekwondo Association and a member of the CTU executive board.
After his appointment while talking to this medium, Oness Abayomi Johnson said when he received the mail he felt excited about him to serve as the Regional Representative for the 19 Commonwealth Taekwondo Countries, noting it was not a surprise for him as it was all based on his hard work he has put into sport over the years; that has prompted the World Taekwondo Federation to appoint him to serve in such capacity.
Johnson said he will continue to work hard and to take Taekwondo to a different trajectory within the Africa continent and the World at large.
He further that, when they were in Baku at the general assembly they engaged in several meetings that were geared toward ways of changing the dynamics of sports and encouraging people within the world to get involved, adding that in their discussion in Baku, his meaningful contribution move the world body to give him the mantle to stairs the Africa Regional.
President Johnson said this was his very first appointment within the African region and he is much more ready to work, learn from people, and bring in something new about how the sport is operating.
In his new role, Johnson will be responsible for promoting and developing taekwondo in Africa. He will also work to ensure that African athletes are represented at Commonwealth taekwondo events.
Johnson’s appointment is a major boost for taekwondo in Sierra Leone and Africa. He is a highly experienced and respected figure in the sport, and he is well-positioned to help taekwondo grow in Africa.
Here are some of the things that Johnson plans to do in his new role:
Promote taekwondo in Africa: Johnson plans to work with national taekwondo associations in Africa to promote the sport and increase participation. He also plans to organize coaching and refereeing courses to improve the quality of taekwondo in Africa.
Develop African athletes: Johnson plans to work with African athletes to help them develop their skills and achieve their goals.
He also plans to help them gain exposure to international competition.
Ensure African representation at Commonwealth taekwondo events:
Johnson plans to work with the CTU to ensure that African athletes are represented at Commonwealth taekwondo events.
He also plans to help them qualify for these events.
Johnson’s appointment is a positive step for taekwondo in Africa.
He is a passionate and dedicated advocate for the sport, and he is committed to helping it grow in Africa.
Oness Abayomi Johnson is going to work with all 53 members across the globe and 19 Commonwealth Taekwondo Countries within the African continent.
