The Commonwealth Games Association of Sierra Leone (CGA-SLE) has joined the global Commonwealth community in commemorating Commonwealth Day 2026 under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”
The theme highlights the shared values that unite the Commonwealth of Nations, including solidarity, cooperation, inclusion and collective progress among member countries.
In a statement marking the occasion, the CGA-SLE’s President Prince Vandy Sualley emphasized the significant role sport plays in promoting unity, creating opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable development across Commonwealth nations.
According to Sualley, sport remains a powerful platform for unlocking opportunities by nurturing talent, promoting health and wellbeing, empowering women and girls, and providing pathways for youth to pursue excellence and leadership. It noted that through sporting activities, communities are strengthened, barriers are broken and nations are inspired to work together toward a more prosperous future.
“In Sierra Leone, the Commonwealth sporting movement continues to serve as an important catalyst for youth empowerment and national development. The Association stated that through collaboration with its member federations, efforts are ongoing to enhance athlete development, broaden participation in sport and advance gender equality as well as community engagement initiatives.”
Looking ahead, the Association reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Sierra Leone’s presence within the Commonwealth sporting family as preparations continue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place in Glasgow.
He also used the occasion to extend warm greetings to the Commonwealth community in Sierra Leone and expressed appreciation to the British High Commission in Sierra Leone for its continued partnership in strengthening relations between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom.
“Special recognition was given to the British High Commissioner, Josephine Gauld, for her support in promoting cooperation and friendship between the two countries,” the CGA Chief affirmed.
He concluded that through the shared values of the Commonwealth and the unifying power of sport, member nations can continue to unlock opportunities for young people while building a more inclusive and prosperous Commonwealth for future generations.
