In a significant development, the Commercial Motorbike Riders Union in Bo, Sierra Leone, engaged in constructive dialogue with Regional Police Commander South, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Brima Kanneh, to discuss their mounting concerns regarding police interactions.
Representatives from the Sierra Leone Commercial Motorbike Riders in Bo District voiced their grievances during this crucial meeting. They expressed distress over instances where civilians were allegedly employed by the police to apprehend them for traffic offenses, leading to substantial losses of motorbikes. The financial burden of motorcycle ownership and maintenance, coupled with economic challenges faced by many, were highlighted as key factors impacting their livelihoods.
“Our motorbikes come at a considerable cost, and their upkeep is expensive. We also contribute significantly to our bosses. The persistent harassment is negatively affecting our livelihoods,” they emphasized, as they sought intervention from AIG Kanneh and other concerned stakeholders.
In a swift response to these concerns, AIG Kanneh promptly convened a meeting with the Divisional Traffic Officers (DTOs) from both Bo East and West Police Divisions. The primary objective was to address the allegations and collaboratively seek solutions that would establish a harmonious and productive working relationship between the Police and the motorcycle riders.
During this meeting, AIG Kanneh stressed the importance of adherence to traffic regulations and encouraged the riders to cooperate with the Police in identifying any individuals impersonating officers with the intent of unlawfully impounding motorbikes for personal gain.
“Any individual not in police uniform attempting to make an arrest is not a genuine Police Officer,” reiterated Mr. Kanneh. He reassured the bike riders that their concerns were being taken seriously and requested their patience, assuring them of swift resolution. Additionally, plans were unveiled to reduce the number of traffic personnel, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of Police operations.
Despite the concerns raised, Bo City has remained peaceful, with no adverse reports. The Police force is actively working to address the issues raised by the bike riders and maintain a tranquil environment in the region. This collaborative effort demonstrates the commitment of all parties involved to resolve these issues and foster a safer and more supportive community for all.
