Efforts to address gender-based violence (GBV) in Sierra Leone are increasingly emphasizing stronger collaboration and grassroots engagement, as stakeholders intensify action under the Spotlight Initiative platform.

At a high-level meeting held this morning, government representatives, development partners, and civil society organizations reaffirmed their commitment to a more coordinated and responsive approach to tackling GBV. The session, co-chaired by a senior government official and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Kevin Joseph Petrini, highlighted the importance of aligning efforts across sectors to achieve meaningful impact.

While legal reform remains a key pillar, discussions emphasized how partnerships and community-level interventions can translate policies into real change. Participants noted that laws alone are insufficient without effective implementation, awareness-raising, and accessible support systems for survivors.

Civil society groups were particularly recognized for their frontline role in communities, where they continue to raise awareness, provide essential services, and ensure that national policies resonate at the local level. Their work was described as central to bridge the gap between legislation and lived realities.

Stakeholders also identified emerging challenges, including shifting social dynamics and the influence of technology, which require adaptive and forward-looking strategies. This underscores the need for sustained coordination and collaboration across all actors.

In reaffirming the government’s position, the co-chair stressed that ongoing legislative reforms are part of a broader strategy that must be reinforced by strong partnerships and collective accountability.

The Spotlight Initiative platform was commended for creating a space where diverse actors can share insights, align priorities, and mobilize resources.

With renewed focus on collaboration and community-driven solutions, stakeholders expressed confidence that a more unified approach will accelerate progress in reducing GBV and strengthening support for survivors across Sierra Leone.
