Chinese President Xi Jinping meets Japanese Prime Minister Sanai Takaichi

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Japanese Premier Sanai Takaichi on the sidelines of the 32nd Informal Meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders in the Republic of Korea. During their meeting, President Xi stressed the importance of neighboring China and Japan. Building long-term, sound and stable relations serves the common interests of the two peoples and meets the aspirations of the international community, Xi said.

Xi reiterated China’s readiness to work with Japan to uphold the political foundation of bilateral relations, in line with the principles laid out in the four political documents between the two countries, strengthen their mutually beneficial strategic relationship, and build constructive and stable bilateral relations that meet the needs of the new era. He stressed that bilateral relations face opportunities and challenges.

The Chinese president expressed hope that the new Japanese government will be a correct perception of China and remain committed to peace, friendship and cooperation. President Xi also outlined five priorities for flourishing relations: respecting important political consensus; seeking win-win cooperation in areas such as advanced manufacturing, digital economy, green development, and finance; promoting mutual understanding through exchanges between governments, political parties and peoples; promoting multilateral cooperation to build the Asia-Pacific community; and properly managing differences.

For her part, Prime Minister Takaichi stressed the importance of bilateral relations, saying that the two countries share a major responsibility in achieving regional and global peace and prosperity. She also affirmed Japan’s readiness to strengthen communication and cooperation, and advance strategic relations of mutual benefit. It also reaffirmed Japan’s position on the Taiwan issue, as set out in the 1972 China-Japan Joint Statement.
