The Chinese Embassy in Freetown on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, hosted a grand event to commemorate the 98th Anniversary of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Held at the Embassy’s premises on Spur Road, the evening event brought together prominent figures from across Sierra Leone’s political, media, civil society, and security sectors to honour the PLA’s achievements and enduring global impact.
In his keynote address, Senior Colonel Pu Lin emphasized the pride of the Chinese people in reflecting on the PLA’s journey and accomplishments over nearly a century. He highlighted the PLA’s pivotal role in liberating China from foreign occupation specifically referencing the Japanese invasion during World War II and credited the PLA for China’s eventual independence and rise to global prominence.
“The Chinese People’s Liberation Army paved the way for China’s liberation and independence,” Col. Pu Lin stated. “Its strength and resilience have earned it global recognition.”
He noted that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the PLA has significantly evolved, contributing not only to China’s military development but also to international peace and security. He added that the PLA currently provides military training and technical assistance to over 49 countries, including Sierra Leone.
Colonel Pu Lin praised the collaboration between the PLA and Sierra Leone’s Armed Forces, citing the ongoing training programs and technical support provided to Sierra Leonean military personnel. He commended the professionalism and discipline of Sierra Leonean soldiers who have trained in China and reaffirmed China’s commitment to enhancing Sierra Leone’s defense capabilities.
He further emphasized the PLA’s support in combating health crises in Sierra Leone, including deployments of over 2,000 personnel during various epidemic outbreaks. China’s assistance has also extended to the construction of critical military infrastructure, such as the Myong Officers’ Mess and several other bases across the country.
Deputy Minister of Defence, Rtd. Colonel Moana Brima Massaquoi, conveyed President Julius Maada Bio’s warm regards and congratulations to the Chinese government and the PLA. He acknowledged the longstanding and productive bilateral relationship between the two countries.
“Though Sierra Leone and China are far apart geographically, China has always stood closely by our side,” he said. “Their support to our military has been remarkable and worthy of commendation.”
The Deputy Minister expressed gratitude for the infrastructure support already received and appealed for continued assistance in renovating additional military bases in urgent need of development.
In his closing remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Sierra Leone and continuing its support for the country’s development, particularly in the defense sector.
The commemoration celebrated the honour, dedication, and sacrifices made by one of the world’s most formidable military forces, highlighting its contributions to global peace and military development.
The event concluded with a vibrant celebration, during which guests expressed deep appreciation for China’s steadfast support and the PLA’s invaluable contributions to global and regional peace and security.
