Over 15 Chinese companies, supported by the Chinese embassy, organized a joint job fair and corporate image exhibition on May 29-30, 2024, to bolster youth employment opportunities and strengthen economic ties in Sierra Leone. The event, hosted by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone, was spearheaded by the Leone Rock Metal Group (LRMG), a leading mining company in the country.
Jia Renjun, president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sierra Leone, Li Luming, president of the Sierra Leone Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and Chen Xuebin, the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone, reiterated their commitment to supporting President Julius Maada Bio’s “Youth employment scheme,” one of his key initiatives aimed at transforming the nation.
The collaborative event showcased the significant contributions of Chinese companies to Sierra Leone’s development, particularly in mining, agriculture, and infrastructure. Notable projects include the construction of the 34 Military Hospital, highlighting the dedication of these companies to the country’s progress.
Gilbert Zhao, CEO of LRMG, represented the participating Chinese companies, emphasizing the joint efforts of the government, businesses, and the community in creating a resilient workforce. LRMG, the largest employer in Sierra Leone with over 6,000 employees, reaffirmed its support for President Bio’s ambitious target of generating 500,000 jobs by 2025.
Key government officials, including Mohamed Rado Swarray, Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security; Haja Ramatulai Wurrie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education; and Mohamed Orman Bangura, Minister of Youth Affairs, praised the event for its potential to foster cultural exchange and job creation. They commended President Bio’s efforts in promoting social development and attracting investments to benefit young people.
Wang Qing, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, acknowledged the government’s support and encouraged participants to engage with industry leaders, thereby strengthening economic cooperation between the two nations.
Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, Speaker of Parliament, noted the expected increase in local employment due to the job fair, projecting a positive impact on the country’s labor market.
The launch of this job fair and corporate image exhibition represents a significant milestone in enhancing professional development in Sierra Leone. It underscores the shared commitment of Chinese companies and the Sierra Leonean government to building a sustainable and inclusive workforce, contributing to the nation’s future prosperity.
