A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday called on the international community to intensify efforts to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East.
The Persian Gulf and its adjacent waters are vital international passages for goods and energy trade, said Guo Jiakun, the spokesperson.
Maintaining security and stability in the region aligns with the common interests of the international community, said Guo.
He made the appeal in comments responding to reports that the Iranian parliament on Sunday voted in favor of closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, though the final decision rests with the country’s Supreme National Security Council.
Iran’s move came after the United States bombed three major Iranian nuclear sites.
