The Chinese economy demonstrated strong resilience and vitality despite challenging external factors in 2025, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Liu Jieyi, spokesperson for the fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China’s top political advisory body, made the remarks at a press conference, one day before its annual session.

China’s total economic output crossed the new threshold of 140 trillion yuan (about $20 trillion) in 2025, with its growth rate continuing to rank among the highest of major economies globally, Liu said.

New quality productive forces have grown rapidly, with deep integration of technology and industry leading to a surge of innovative achievements, the spokesperson said.

Liu said domestic tourism spending during the nine-day Spring Festival holiday exceeded 803.4 billion yuan, an increase of 126.4 billion yuan compared to the previous year, highlighting the vibrance of China’s market.

The 40-day Spring Festival travel rush, which concludes on March 13, is expected to see 9.5 billion cross-regional passenger trips, effectively averaging more than one journey for every person on Earth, he said.

Liu said thanks to stable fundamentals, numerous advantages, strong resilience and vast potential, the Chinese economy still enjoys unchanged underlying conditions for and basic trend for a long-term sound development, despite some persistent issues and new challenges.

“As long as we remain confident, leverage our strengths and address challenges effectively, we can surely continue to consolidate and build upon the momentum of stable and positive growth, propelling China’s economy forward steadily and surely through the

China to open door wider

China’s door will not be closed, but will only open wider, said Liu.

In December, China launched island-wide special customs operations in the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP), the world’s largest FTP by area, allowing freer entry of overseas goods, expanded zero-tariff coverage and more business-friendly measures.

The move, Liu said, is a landmark step in China’s unwavering commitment to expanding high-standard opening up and promoting an open world economy.

During the Spring Festival holiday, duty-free shopping sales in Hainan Province increased by 30.8% compared with last year, while the number of visa-free foreign travelers to the tropical island surged by 75.6%, he noted.

The Hainan FTP marks a new exploration by China to steadily expand institutional opening up in areas such as rules, regulations, management and standards, Liu said.

China will remain steadfast in expanding high-standard opening up, and promoting trade and investment liberalization and facilitation to provide more positive energy and certainty for global development and share development opportunities with all to create a better future together, he added.
