A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense expressed serious concern on Wednesday over Japan’s accelerated military expansion and warned against repeating the mistakes of history.
On August 29, Japan’s Ministry of Defense submitted a record-high defense budget request of $60.2 billion (8.8 trillion yen) for the 2026 fiscal year. In addition, Japan plans to deploy an upgraded version of the GSDF’s Type-12 land-to-ship guided missile in Kyushu, which has a range covering China’s coastal areas.
Spokesperson Jiang Bin stated at a press conference that Japan’s military development has far exceeded what is necessary for “exclusive defense,” noting that it includes offensive weapons and equipment. He questioned Japan’s intentions, emphasizing that such actions have raised concerns among peace-loving nations worldwide.
Jiang also recalled that 80 years ago, Japanese militarism waged a war of aggression that inflicted profound suffering on people across Asia. He underscored that regional countries are now more determined than ever to safeguard peace and will never allow the resurgence of Japanese militarism.
“We urge Japan to deeply reflect on its history of aggression, earnestly respect the security concerns of its Asian neighbors and the international community, act prudently in military and security affairs, and avoid repeating the mistakes of history,” Jiang said.
