The Taiwan question represents the core of China’s core interests and constitutes the first and foremost red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Friday.
Lin’s remarks came after media reports about the U.S.’s plan to ramp up weapons sales to the Taiwan region.
China firmly opposes U.S. arms sales to China’s Taiwan region, Lin said. He urged the U.S. to strictly abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique, cease arms sales to Taiwan and refrain from creating factors that escalate tensions across the Taiwan Straits.
China’s resolve to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity remains unwavering, Lin said.
