The People’s Republic of China has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with Sierra Leone in the areas of education, vocational training, and youth empowerment. This pledge was underscored during a courtesy visit by Mr. Peng Wang, the newly appointed Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, to the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Ramatulai Wurie.

Held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Freetown, the meeting focused on enhancing technical and higher education programs aligned with Sierra Leone’s national development goals. Mr. Wang, accompanied by Education Officer Liu Siyu, highlighted China’s intention to align infrastructure investments with long-term human capital development.

“Investments must do more than build roads and factories—they must build people,” Mr. Wang emphasized. He referenced major projects like the Leone Rock mining venture and an automobile assembly plant, stressing the importance of integrating vocational training and skills transfer into these initiatives for the benefit of Sierra Leoneans.

A key highlight of the meeting was the proposed “train-the-trainer” model, aimed at strengthening local expertise by equipping educators with advanced skills to support vocational institutions nationwide. Mr. Wang also reaffirmed the Embassy’s open-door policy and advocated for closer ties between the governments and academic institutions of both countries.

Several significant initiatives were unveiled during the visit:

Scholarship Interviews Scheduled: Over 900 applications have been received for the MOFCOM and Chinese Government Scholarships, with interviews set for June 1st at the Kungfu Institute. The high number of applicants reflects increasing interest among Sierra Leonean students in pursuing higher education in China.

Cultural Exchange Center Plans: A feasibility team from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) is expected in June to assess a site in Soryong for the establishment of a new cultural exchange center. The center will aim to promote mutual understanding through programs in arts, language, and cultural heritage.

Chinese Bridge Language Competition: The 24th edition of the global Chinese language proficiency contest will be hosted in June. Minister Wurie is scheduled to deliver a keynote address during the local competition on June 10th, with winners proceeding to represent Sierra Leone on the international stage.

Luban Workshop Discussions: Ongoing discussions with the Tianjin Municipal Government focus on establishing a high-level vocational and technical training center in Sierra Leone, aligning with broader goals for workforce development.

Minister Wurie praised China’s consistent support for Sierra Leone’s education sector, describing the bilateral relationship as one rooted in “shared values and practical outcomes.” She acknowledged the success of previous collaborations, including the MOFCOM and Ambassador’s Scholarships, as well as the Memorandum of Understanding between Kono University of Science and Technology and the China University of Geosciences.

She also referenced recent high-level talks with Chinese officials on agricultural innovation, held during a state visit with President Julius Maada Bio, as part of Sierra Leone’s broader Feed Salone initiative.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to advancing mutual development through education, cultural exchange, and technical cooperation. As China and Sierra Leone continue to deepen their partnership, the emphasis remains on empowering a skilled, knowledgeable, and globally competitive generation of Sierra Leoneans.
