The Kono District Project coordinator Street Child of Sierra Leone Glenis Mani Ngaujah who also doubles as the Executive Secretary Civil Society Organization in Kono District has said that Child Labour is on the increase in Kono District.
Mr. Ngaujah made the statement in an interview with A-Z with regards the commemoration of this year’s world day against child labour on the Theme “Universal social protection to end child Labour”.
The day is commemorated on the 12th June every year. According to him this year’s Theme of the world day against Child labour calls for increased investment in the social protection system and schemes of the campaign in order to establish solid protection against child labour.
The Kono District project coordinator, Street Child of Sierra Leone further maintained that poverty and the lack of knowledge on the Child rights acts by parents and caregivers are the major factors responsible for the reported increase of Child labour in the District.
Glenis Mani Ngaujah has therefore called on all and sundry to put hands on deck for the reduction or elimination of the said menace in Kono District. However this year’s world day against child labour was never observed or commemorated in Kono District where there is a proliferation of Child focussed organizations. In a separate development Sierra Leone has joined other African countries to commemorate this year’s Africa Child’s day.
