The Honourable Chief Justice, Komba Kamanda, has ordered the immediate release of petty trader Madam Fatmata Kamara, popularly known as “Mammy Iye,” following a summary review of her conviction on Freetown, 24 March 2026.

The decision was made pursuant to Section 5 of the Summary Review Act, Cap 17 of the Laws of Sierra Leone (1960), which empowers the Chief Justice to review decisions of Magistrates’ Courts without requiring a formal appeal.

Mammy Iye had been serving a one-week sentence at the Female Correctional Centre after being convicted on two counts of public insult and provocation, contrary to Sections 2 and 3(1) of the Public Order Act (1965).

According to the Private Criminal Summons, the incident occurred on 5 March 2026 at a welding shop in New Jersey Junction, Goderich, Freetown. The complainant, a magistrate, had reportedly gone to purchase food from the defendant when the altercation took place.

Mammy Iye pleaded guilty to both charges and was subsequently convicted and sentenced by the York Magistrate’s Court.

Following a review of the case under the Summary Review Act, the Chief Justice exercised his authority to order her immediate release after she had served one week of her sentence.
