On Monday 24th, February 2025, the Chief Justice of Sierra Leone Komba Kamanda made an unannounced visit to the Pademba Road Court in Freetown, a move aimed at assessing the state of court operations firsthand.

The surprise inspection underscored his commitment to judicial accountability and efficiency.

In his visit, Justice Kamanda personally toured multiple courtrooms and chambers, ensuring that magistrates and judicial staff were present and actively performing their duties. Expressing satisfaction with their work, he remarked, “As a leader, it is important to see firsthand how my team is working.”

However, the visit also exposed critical challenges, including frequent electricity blackouts and inadequate water supply, issues that continue to hamper the smooth functioning of the court. He assured staff that immediate measures would be taken to resolve those concerns.

Beyond Pademba Road, the Chief Justice pledged to extend similar inspections across magistrate courts nationwide, emphasising that he would not rely solely on second-hand reports. “Accountability is key,” he affirmed, “and I will personally ensure that our courts are operating effectively.”

Justice Kamanda also took note of the significant number of litigants present at the court, interpreting it as a sign of public confidence in the judiciary. “People believe in the justice system, and we must work hard to maintain that trust,” he stated.

With over two decades in the judiciary, including a decade as a magistrate in both Freetown and the provinces, Justice Kamanda reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening Sierra Leone’s justice system. His proactive approach signals a renewed effort to enhance court efficiency, address systemic issues, and ensure access to justice for all.
