In a move aimed at strengthening access to justice across remote parts of Sierra Leone, the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Komba Kamanda, has secured six motorcycles from the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Wang Qing.
The motorcycles, presented at an official handing-over ceremony, are intended to support the Judiciary’s mission to improve legal service delivery in hard-to-reach communities. The donation follows a series of high-level meetings focused on capacity building and expanding access to justice nationwide.
In his remarks, Ambassador Wang Qing congratulated Chief Justice Kamanda on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Judicial Council of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He emphasized that the donation is part of China’s ongoing commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s justice sector.
“I hope this contribution enhances the Judiciary’s ability to deliver justice, especially in underserved areas,” Ambassador Wang stated, expressing confidence in the Chief Justice’s reform agenda.
He reaffirmed the Chinese Embassy’s dedication to continued cooperation with the Judiciary on developmental initiatives.
Chief Justice Kamanda expressed deep appreciation to the Ambassador and the People’s Republic of China, acknowledging their consistent support. He explained that the motorcycles will be assigned to Bailiffs, whose role involves serving legal documents often in remote and inaccessible regions.
“Under my leadership, the Judiciary has expanded its footprint to areas where no Magistrates previously operated,” he said. “These motorcycles will help expedite legal processes and ensure timely access to justice in those difficult terrains.”
He reiterated that access to justice remains a top priority in his ongoing reform efforts and that the addition of transportation resources is a significant step toward achieving faster and more efficient judicial service delivery.
Chief Justice Kamanda also recounted the productive meetings held with Ambassador Wang Qing, during which they discussed various aspects of judicial development including the need for motorcycles and buses to support staff mobility.
Receiving the documents and keys to the six motorcycles, the Chief Justice expressed optimism that the longstanding bilateral relationship between Sierra Leone and China would continue to yield mutual benefits, particularly in the area of governance and institutional support.
