In response to circulating rumors regarding the relocation of the Kania Konekor Market in Trankoro Chiefdom, Kono District, Sahr Wilson Fillie Faboi, the newly appointed Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), has voiced support for Koidu Limited mining company, citing significant contributions to local development.
Amidst speculation that Paramount Chief Paul Ngaba Saquee ordered the market’s relocation to make way for a filling station, Faboi clarified that the move aims to safeguard citizens rather than facilitate commercial ventures. He emphasized concerns over the market’s previous location, deeming it unsuitable for business transactions.
Highlighting Koidu Limited’s positive impact, Faboi enumerated various initiatives undertaken by the mining company, including the construction of security posts at border crossing points, rehabilitation of the Koidu School for the Blind, and establishment of a resource center for women in the Kissibona community.
Faboi provided historical context, tracing the inception of CDC back to the early 20th century when mining companies in the region neglected community development. He underscored the government’s role in establishing the committee to utilize proceeds from mining operations for local upliftment.
Notably, Faboi outlined the evolution of surface rent payments, indicating a gradual increase from 0.011 to 0.25.1 by 2012, with plans for further escalation to one percent. He attributed the funding to various developmental projects in the chiefdom, including the construction of primary schools and resource centers.
Despite controversies surrounding the market relocation, Faboi’s statements reflect a broader sentiment of appreciation for Koidu Limited’s contributions to community development. However, the issue remains contentious, with implications for local commerce and infrastructure planning.
As discussions continue, stakeholders anticipate further clarification from both the CDC and paramount chief’s office regarding the rationale behind the market’s relocation and its potential impact on the community.
