Freetown, 30th January 2024: United Bank for Africa (UBA) Sierra Leone Limited is delighted to announce the Central Bank of Sierra Leone’s approval of Mohamed Alhajie Samoura as the substantive Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Sierra Leone.
The “No Objection” approval, received on 30th January 2024 from the Bank of Sierra Leone, follows the endorsement of his nomination by both the UBA Group Office and the UBA Sierra Leone Board of Directors in December 2023. Having served as the Acting MD/CEO since February of the previous year, Mohamed is the first Sierra Leonean to hold such a position since the bank commenced operations in Sierra Leone in 2008.
Mr. Samoura, the 6th MD/CEO of UBA Sierra Leone, succeeded his predecessor, Usman Isiaka, who currently serves as the Deputy MD/CEO of UBA New York.
Since taking on the role, Mr. Samoura has diligently built upon the legacies of his predecessors, demonstrating exceptional leadership by significantly increasing figures in revenue, profitability, deposits, account openings, and risk assets. He has displayed a strong commitment to promoting Sierra Leonean businesses and fostering the growth of the UBA brand.
Prior to his appointment as the substantive Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Samoura served as the Executive Director of Business Development at the bank and also held the position of Acting MD/CEO of UBA Sierra Leone. With close to two decades of experience in the Sierra Leone banking industry, Mohamed brings a wealth of knowledge to his role.
His achievements have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by several accolades, including being named among the 100 Most Outstanding Executives in Sierra Leone by the Sierra Ovation Awards. Under his leadership, UBA Sierra Leone received the prestigious Bank of the Year award in 2023 from the Banker’s Financial Times UK, as well as numerous recognitions for outstanding customer service and contributions to the social and economic development of Sierra Leone.
Mr. Samoura, a graduate with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science and a master’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing, has been recognized for his significant impact on Sierra Leone’s banking landscape.
His appointment aligns with UBA Group’s strategic focus on domesticating governance, products, and services to meet local requirements across its 20 presence countries in Africa, supporting human capital development and ensuring adherence to international standards.
Operating in twenty African countries and internationally, including the United Kingdom, the United States of America, France, and the United Arab Emirates, United Bank for Africa remains committed to providing retail, commercial, and institutional banking services.
