As one of the eight eminent people to champion zero waste globally, the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone Dr. Fatima Bio has on Tuesday 7th November 2023 at the government press briefing set forth that she would be hosting the First Lady of Turkey on the first celebration of “International Day of Zero Waste” on March 30 2024.
The International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, support the societal shift towards circularity and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The initiative can foster sound waste management and minimize and prevent waste, helping to address the tripe planetary crisis, protect the environment, enhance food security and improve well-being,” United Nations
The First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone revealed that in few months ago the United Nations Secretary General appointed her again as the eight eminent people to champion the zero waste global initiative. On their first meeting last week at Istanbul Turkey where all the eight eminent people assembled, First Lady Fatima Bio said that they were able to discuss the way forward as it was the first time they were given their terms of reference.
At the press briefing Dr. Madam Fatima Bio revealed that on their engagement with the First Lady of Turkey who doubled as the Chair of the zero waste global committee, they agreed that the first zero waste global summit would be held in Freetown Sierra Leone. “So we are looking forward to welcoming the United Nations for the first celebration of the International Day of Zero Waste in Freetown. It would be the first time for the first Lady of Turkey to visit Sierra Leone,” Madam Fatima Bio expressed.
Dr. Fatima Bio, First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone furthered that the person the United Nations appointed to lead the Road Safety for Global Accident Jean Todt had also recommended her to work with him. On their meeting discussing the way forward on the Road Safety initiative, Madam Fatima Bio said the Champion for the initiative Jean Todt requested of her to be one of his eminent people to work with on championing Road safety for global accident.
Madam Fatima Bio intimated that the Road Safety initiative would ensure to overlook the safety of roads, the implementation of traffic lights in every districts and cities around the world whilst they would also engage with drivers. “Jean Todt had also promised to come to Sierra Leone as soon as possible maybe in February so that we can put heads together as we shall be starting the Sierra Leone side of Road Safety,” First Lady Madam Fatima Bio assured.
As First Lady Fatima Bio was also appointed to be the champion for Adolescence Girls, she expressed that all of those appointments were jobs, adding that she would be paid for doing those jobs. “So these were the opportunities I gained within the United Nations, three jobs and one voluntary job. I thank Allah, my Husband, President Julius Maada Bio and the people of Sierra Leone,” she expressed.
