In the pursuit of sustained success and the reinforcement of accountability, with a specific focus on advancing the accomplishments of the Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and fortifying democratic principles in Sierra Leone, President Julius Maada Bio, the Republic of Sierra Leone, joined hands with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and fellow African Union members to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the APRM.

Leaders from various regions in West Africa convened in Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 13, 2023, to mark this significant milestone and collectively underscore their commitment to democratic ideals. President Maada commenced the event with a compelling acknowledgment of the substantial progress made by African countries and leaders. He paid tribute to the selfless efforts of those who laid the groundwork for the APRM—an instrumental self-assessment mechanism designed to foster accountability, transparency, and adherence to democratic principles. Maada emphasized that the sacrifices made have paved the way for the current enjoyment of democratic dividends, underscoring the price paid to uphold democracy, the rule of law, and good governance.

Elaborating further, Dr. Bio provided a brief overview, stating that the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), established in 2003, was initiated by the African Union in 2002 within the framework of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). Its objective was to provide comprehensive assistance and services to the entire African sub-region.

In his capacity as the Chair of the African Peer Review (APR) Forum of Heads of State and Government, President Bio expressed profound gratitude to Member States, citizens, and the APRM Continental Secretariat for their unwavering support. He highlighted the importance of their commitment in enhancing governance structures, fostering cooperation, and strengthening relationships to promote integration among countries. President Bio stressed that unity among African leaders is essential in identifying and collectively addressing issues.

President Bio underscored the immense impact of the APRM, noting tangible improvements in political participation, transparency, accountability, human rights, and economic management within participating countries. In conclusion, he urged African nations yet to commit to the committee to do so, particularly the 12 remaining African Union Member States. He emphasized the shared vision of the APRM, advocating for transformative leadership and practice, and expressed gratitude to the APR Panel of Eminent Persons and APRM Secretariat for recognizing his leadership. President Bio pledged continued dedication to achieving more success in the future.
