At the 145th United Methodist Church (UMC) Annual Conference held on March 5, 2025, at the Urban Centre in Kissy, Prof. Edwin J.J. Momoh, a senior clergy and Conference Secretary for the past 16 years, announced that he will no longer seek re-election for the position. In his statement, Prof. Momoh emphasised the critical need for unity and cohesion within the church.

Despite receiving widespread support, he revealed that his decision to step down was made in order to create space for others to lead and serve in the role. “I’m just a phone call away to assist when called upon,” he said, pledging his continued commitment to the church’s work.

During his address, Prof. Momoh made an impassioned call for unity, referencing the teachings of the Bible, which call for harmony and collaboration. He pointed out that there should be no opposition within the church and urged aggrieved candidates from last year’s UMC conference to embrace the vision of the newly elected Bishop James Boyie Caulker, offering their support to further his efforts.

Prof. Momoh also appealed to those who had emerged victorious in the elections not to intimidate others but to prioritise inclusivity and unity. “I was among the contenders for the position but I lost. That does not in any way serve as a deterrent for me to serve humanity and the church,” he shared.

When asked about the significance of serving in the church, Prof. Momoh reflected on the priceless nature of service to humanity. “When one serves with sincerity, they will surely eat the fruit of their labor. I am a testament to that,” he added.

Prof. Momoh concluded by announcing that while he would be stepping down as Conference Secretary, he would remain an active member of the church and continue serving as a senior clergy.
