In a decisive move to protect lives and property, the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, under the leadership of Minister Dr. Turad Sennesie, has initiated a large-scale demolition campaign targeting structures built in high-risk areas of Bo. The operation, which began on Monday, August 5, 2024, focuses on the removal of buildings erected in disaster-prone zones, including waterways and swamps
This initiative is part of a broader effort to mitigate risks associated with unsafe constructions and to enhance safety in vulnerable communities. The campaign is being carried out in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Bo District Council, the City Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police for the Southern region, as well as the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) and local authorities.
Among the structures demolished were residential houses and commercial shops that were obstructing access to vital roadways and major water channels. Engineers had previously identified these buildings as hazardous, even before their construction was complete, citing potential risks to the surrounding areas
Minister Sennesie underscored the critical importance of these actions, stressing that the ministry is committed to preventing potential disasters and ensuring the safety of all residents. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to continuing these efforts until all unsafe structures are removed from disaster-prone areas
The demolition campaign reflects a collaborative approach by the government, bringing together experts from various fields, including engineering and law enforcement, to address safety concerns in the region. By prioritizing the well-being of its citizens, the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning aims to foster a safer and more resilient community.
As the operation continues, the ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding high standards of urban planning and sustainable development. Through these proactive measures, the government seeks to ensure the long-term security and prosperity of the Bo community.
