Bike Monitoring Officers (BMO) belonging to the Moyamba District Bike Riders Union has embarked into a robust action to instill discipline into the biker Riders who do not want to obey the traffic rules.
Speaking to this reporter on a motor bike heading for Moyamba Junction, Inspector P.L Lamin said that they are strategically placed in Moyamba district to monitor the activities of their members in the district. He said the essence of the exercise is to ensure that they ride within the ambit of the law as they complimenting the effort of the police District.
“I told your rider to stop because I wanted to see whether he is properly dressed, because we do not want to allow them to ride with slippers and we also cautioned them to ride within the speed limit for the internal and external movement of the bike’’ he said.
He added that when you ride within the speed limit, it will help to reduce accident and even if an accident occurred, the impact will not be grave.’’
Inspector Lamin said, we do not only collect daily dues from the bike riders but safety messages are also preached to them to know that their lives and passengers are important.
Residents of Moyamba called on the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority to intensify sensitization on speed management in Moyamba District, as they have a newly constructed road from Moyamba Junction to Moyamba town.
One of the civil society activist in Moyamba District, Janet Musa, explained that bike riders in Moyamba need to be educated on speed management as some of them are not quit knowledgeable on the dangers on speed, and called on the Moyamba Road Contractor (CSE) to also work with the Bike riders Union to the teach the new riders on how to use the road.
She called on the Road Safety Committee in the Southern Region to ensure that Zebra crossing points are provided at strategic locations in Moyamba which will help to reduce accident, as national statistics have indicated road accident is still high in the country.
