Supposedly Freetown and some other parts in Sierra Leone have joined the world over to celebrate this year’s world blood donor day on the theme “Donating Blood is an act of solidarity join the effort and save lives”.
The celebration and theme are to draw to the attention of the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and the enhancement of solidarity within the communities.
The world blood donor day for this year is marked by a Seminar on building effective national blood donor programs to ensure safe and secure blood supplies.
The Seminar is organised by world health organization (WHO’s) blood and other products of human origin team in collaboration with the national blood transfusion centre Mexico the host country of this year’s world blood donor day celebration.
Meanwhile, when interviewed by this medium an official at the Blood Donor Bank the Koidu Government Hospital thanked all those who have voluntarily donated blood for saving the lives of others.
He pointed out that it is important to donate blood after every three months as the human body system accumulates a lot of blood for every three months.
However, the day was never observed or celebrated in Kono district and efforts by this medium to contact those in charge of the blood bank unit at the Koidu Government Hospital proved futile as phones were constantly switched off.
