The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) held its Elective Congress on Saturday at the Gateway Hotel in Lungi, resulting in the election of Babadi Kamara as the new president.
Kamara, who also serves as chairman of Bo Rangers Football Club, secured a decisive victory with 43 votes. His rivals, Umaru Bah and Aminata Bangura, received just 1 and 11 votes, respectively.
His election comes in the wake of the disqualification of former SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima by the SLFA Ethics Board. Brima was removed from the race due to allegations of document falsification, a decision that has drawn significant attention from football enthusiasts.
In his acceptance speech, Kamara praised the organization of the congress and emphasized the importance of unity within the football community. He extended an invitation to all stakeholders including his former opponents — to work together toward the advancement of football in Sierra Leone.
Kamara is already known for his contributions to football development, notably the construction of the 6,000-capacity Southern Arena Stadium. He believes such infrastructure projects can play a key role in boosting the sport’s profile and improving local football standards.
Public reaction to Kamara’s election has been mixed. While some express hope for meaningful reform, others remain cautious due to the recent controversies surrounding the SLFA. The association now faces the challenge of repairing internal divisions and improving its operational effectiveness.
As the SLFA moves forward, much will depend on Kamara’s ability to unite stakeholders and implement lasting, positive change in Sierra Leonean football.
