President Bio’s speech, themed “Navigating the Future: Democracy, Progressive Politics and Inclusive Development in Africa ─ The Sierra Leone Experience,” resonated with attendees as he articulated the interconnectedness of global crises and their impact on democratic societies. He highlighted the escalating energy and food prices stemming from the war in Ukraine and its reverberations across continents, emphasizing the strain on democracies worldwide.
Reflecting on Sierra Leone’s journey towards democracy, President Bio acknowledged the country’s progress from colonialism and civil war to a vibrant democracy. He candidly addressed his own past involvement in military interventions, emphasizing a transition towards democratic governance and peace mediation efforts with rebel factions.
Throughout his address, President Bio reiterated the importance of leadership adaptable to challenges, grounded in values of transparency, justice, and equality. He emphasized the symbiotic relationship between democracy and development, exemplified by recent legislative advances promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
