Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, along with First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, Chief Minister Dr. Moinina David Sengeh, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and top military officers, attended the National Armed Forces Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph, George Street, Freetown, on Sunday, 9th November 2025.
The solemn ceremony, held under the theme “For a Better Future, Remember Yesterday, Act Today,” called on citizens to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of those who gave their lives in defense of peace and freedom.
The commemoration honored the gallant men and women who fought and died in World War I (1914–1918), World War II (1939–1945), the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991–2002), and other regional and international conflicts.
Later in the service, Vice President Juldeh Jalloh and First Lady Fatima Maada Bio, along with other dignitaries, laid wreaths in memory of the fallen, expressing solidarity with widows, families, and veterans gathered at the ceremony.
The atmosphere was solemn and emotional as war veterans stood alongside serving officers, diplomats, and members of the public. A minute of silence offered a poignant reminder of the price paid for the nation’s peace secured through bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering service.
Speakers at the event underscored the importance of preserving the legacy of remembrance and passing it on to younger generations. “It is because of their choices and sacrifices that we live in freedom today,” one official remarked, urging Sierra Leoneans to uphold unity, discipline, and patriotism as living tributes to those who served.
The ceremony concluded with interfaith prayers for the nation and renewed commitments to improve the welfare of ex-servicemen, widows, and their families ensuring that the sacrifices of Sierra Leone’s heroes will never be forgotten.
