Enhancing healthcare accessibility and sustainability, the Ministry of Health (MoH) unveiled an ambitious plan to electrify all 1,600 health facilities across Sierra Leone using solar energy.
This commitment was announced during a high-level national event focused on climate resilience and energy transition, launched by President Julius Maada Bio.
On November 5, 2023, Dr. Jalika, a prominent figure in the MoH, delivered a powerful keynote address that emphasized the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions in the healthcare sector. “Access to reliable electricity is crucial for improving health outcomes and providing essential services,” Dr. Jalika stated. Her speech underscored the government’s commitment to combating climate change while also addressing the pressing energy needs of the country’s health facilities.
The event brought together stakeholders from government, international organizations, and civil society, all united to foster a climate-resilient future for Sierra Leone.
President Bio expressed his administration’s dedication to transitioning to renewable energy and ensuring that health facilities are equipped to provide quality care without interruption.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the healthcare system’s resilience to climate-related challenges, such as rising temperatures and increased natural disasters. By harnessing solar energy, the government aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower operational costs, and improve the overall efficiency of health services.
The MoH’s plan marks a pivotal step towards sustainable development in Sierra Leone. It demonstrates how innovative energy solutions can transform the healthcare landscape while addressing climate change.
